Ball joints.-A resilient ball-retaining member is adapted by simple manipulation to be engaged with the socket in a ball-holding position or to be released therefrom, the retaining member when in the ball-holding position presenting a rigidly supported part to the underside of the ball. As shown in Fig. 1 a clip 5 which embraces the neck of the socket member 1 has a straight piece 4 which engages a tangential hole 3 below the centre of the ball 2. A divided resilient locking ring may be provided to retain the ball in place after the pin 4 has been withdrawn. In a modification, both ends of the retaining member engage under the ball, the middle part of the resilient retaining member engaging a projection on the socket member. In Fig. 15, a spring- actuated ball 28 is provided to press the ball 2 against the bent part 30 of the loop 29, the ends of which clip the neck 32. In Fig. 19 a locking ring 36 engages a slot 35 beneath the ring 8. In Fig. 23 a resilient ring 8 located beneath the ball has ends projecting into a slot 46 and provided with buttons 47. When the buttons are twisted into the position shown the ring 8 becomes a rigid supporting member. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 258,201.
