Abstract

314,102. Wilson, W. G. Feb. 20, 1928. Railway locomotives, internal-combustion engine; driving-gear of crank-type; coupling-rods and like mechanism.-Comprises crank and coupling- rod driving-gear for locomotives and motor vehicles in which a change-speed gear driven by an internal-combustion or other engine drives the track wheels through cranks and jack-shafts, giving a drive without dead centres. If the engine is not reversible a reversing gear is provided. Two engines may be provided driving a single change-speed gear through a triangular arrangement of coupling rods. In the construction shown an engine a drives a change-speed gear f through bevel reversing gear c. The gear f drives a crank o connected by a triangular rod system s, t, z to cranks x, w on jack-shafts u, v. The other ends of the jack-shafts are coupled by a rod 10 and cranks y, w<1> displaced 90‹ from the. cranks x, w. The jack-shaft u drives the track wheels r through coupling rods 13, 14 on one side and 19, 20 on the other. The change-speed gear f may be the epicyclic gear described in Specification 164,042, [Class 80 (ii), Gearing, Variablespeed &c.]. In a. modification a transverse reversible engine is coupled to the change-speed gear shaft and an additional jack-shaft through crank mechanism comprising a triangular rod system similar to that described above, the change-speed gear being connected to the track wheels by a second set of this mechanism.
