Abstract
310,086. Bomford, D. R. Jan. 20, 1928. Traction engines, steam.-A hauling-engine for use in the cultivation of land on a cable system and comprising a steam or other prime mover 21, a cable winding-drum 14, and a deflecting sheave 20 around which the cable 16 passes from the implements to the drum, has the parts so arranged that (a) the cable passes from the implement to be hauled around the sheave 20, thence around a guide pulley 17, and from the latter directly on to the drum, (b) the guide pulley and cable drum are placed as far apart as is possible, (c) the pull of the cable will come approximately on the centre of transverse resistance of the engine and as near the ground as convenient, and (d) that the portion of the periphery at which the cable leaves the guide pulley is located between the planes of the sides of the drum. The drum 14 is arranged between the two axles 10. 13 with its axis horizontal and as near as possible to the axle 13. The pulley 17 is disposed with its axis vertical at the rear end of the vehicle beyond the axle 10. The sheave 20 is integral with a toothed rack 28 and is slidably mounted in guides on the framework. The rack is engaged by a gear 30, Fig. 3, on a shaft 31 which is connected by worm gearing 32 to a shaft 34 provided with a hand-wheel 35. A shaft 22 driven by chain gearing from the prime-mover 21 carries a gear 24 which engages a toothed wheel 25 integral with or secured to the drum 14. The rear driving wheels 11, 12 are driven by chain gearing 26, 27 from the shaft 22. A clutch 36 controlled by a hand lever 39 connects the gear 24 to the shaft 22. Clutches 40, 41 actuated by forks 48 connect the chain gears 26, 27 to the shaft 22. The forks are integral with slidable bars 47 which are connected by links 46 to a bar 44 mounted in a guide 45 and connected by a rod 43 to a hand-lever 42. Either clutch can be locked in the engaged or disengaged position and the other clutch actuated as desired. The locking-meanscomprises a bell-crank lever 49 one arm of which engages either of two notches 50 in the bar 47, and the other arm of which is pivoted to a rod 51 actuated by a pedal 53. The fuel and water tanks 63 are removably mounted on the main frame bv brackets over the front axle 13. The boiler 60 is held in position in a housing 59 bv angle-irons 61. The housing 59 is bolted to the longitudinal girders 54 of the framework.
