Abstract

291,520. Mason, H. L. Jan. 3, 1927. Safety Valves ; pressure - reducing valves; seats.-In a safety or reducing valve for steam &c. of the kind in which a main valve is controlled by a doubleheaded pilot valve the seat 10<1> of the main valve 10 is introduced and held in a direction opposed to that of the closure of the valve. The pilot valve has two heads 37 and is loaded by a spring 47. Normally the lower valve 37 is open and steam is admitted by a pipe 48 to a cylinder 15, acting upon a piston 16 to keep the main valve 10 closed, but excessive pressure closes the lower valve 37 and opens the upper one, so that the cylinder 15 is exhausted and the main valve 10 opens. In a modification, the cylinder 15 is separated from the main casing by a diaphragm, both sides of the piston 16 being controlled by the pilot valve. The main valve may be provided with packing as described in Specification 270,771.
