Traction engines, internal-combustion engine; combination apparatus. - Ploughs and other implements are drawn to and fro by a cable between two tractors each driven by one or more internal-combustion engines 2 and each provided with a driving-shaft 5 driven through a clutch 3, a countershaft 8 parallel to the shaft 5 and geared with it by spur gearing 6, 7, and a winding drum 9 fixed on the countershaft, with or without a circular saw 22 and means for driving it from the shaft 5. The engine 2 of the four-wheeled tractor shown, may have one, two, four, or more cylinders and may drive the rear axle. The drum 9 may be grooved to receive the steel cable 10 which runs over a pulley 11 loosely mounted on a shaft 12 in line with the shaft 5, and connected to it by a clutch 13. A second countershaft 21 may be driven from the shaft 12 by spur gearing 19, 20 and provided with a clutch 23 for driving a circular saw 22, the drum 9 acting as a flywheel. The drum 9 may have a flat surface so that it may be employed for driving thrashing- machines &c. by belt gearing. One engine may be employed to drive the drum 9 and another for propelling the tractor; or two engines may be employed for propelling the tractor and for driving two drums 9 so that two fields may be ploughed at the same time by means of three tractors in line with one another, the middle tractor operating two cables and the other two each operating one cable.
