Abstract

Alarms operated by flowing liquid.-A retarding valve for an alarm check-valve in sprinkler systems to obviate false alarms due to waterhammer, &c., comprises a dome 2 mounted on a base 1 and having an inlet 17 from the checkvalve and an outlet 19 to the alarm apparatus. In the base 1 is a valve chamber 5 separated from thedome 2 by a flexible diaphragm 10 carrying a tubular valve member 11 which co-operates with a valve seat 7 on a plug 6 and is normally raised by a spring 14. Small jets of water entering the dome escape by the valve 11 and a drain pipe 21, but a steady flow of water builds up pressure in the dome until it can depress the diaphragm and close the valve 11. The plug 6 has a drip orifice 8, and an inspection window and cleaning opening (not shown), are provided in the base 1.
