Abstract

A container or can which may be for paint or any contents that degrades on exposure to air, for example varnish or solvent, has a body Y having a rim Z and an open face X. A lid 2, which may be flexible has a skirt 5 that depends down and is located around the upper part of the can, Figures 2A and 2B. A band or strap clamp 6 has an over centre latch 7 that locates the lid in place. A valve 4 may be located in a recess 3. A hand operated pump 8 may be located on the valve, operation of the pump withdraws air from inside the can and creates a partial vacuum. In a second embodiment a flexible cover may be provided with a seal Figure 2A, 14. Depressing the seal forces air through the valve, Figure 2B pulling it toward the level of the paint W.

TITLE: Lid for Container
The present invention relates to a lid for a container, especially a paint can lid.
Most paint is stored in a can with a lid. Often people open a can and use some of the paint and then replace the lid, and then store the can for months or years until the paint is needed again. Often the lid does not seal properly and the paint in the can dries out and becomes unusable.
The invention seeks to provide a solution to this problem.
According to the present invention there is provided a lid for a cylindrical container comprising:
a) a generally circular base member to cover a container open face,
b) a skirt extending from the periphery of the base member to seal against the periphery of the container wall adjacent the open face, and
c) an air extraction valve in the base member, in use the lid being placeable over a container to seal the can open face, and air extracted from the container.
Preferably the skirt includes a releasable strap to seal the skirt against the container wall.
.In one embodiment the valve is adapted to receive an air extraction pump.
In one embodiment the base member has a recess to accommodate the valve. Preferably the base member is of rigid material.
In another embodiment at least the radially outer part of the base member around the valve is formed of stretchable material. Preferably the valve is supported in a rigid radially inner part of the base member.
The invention also relates to a kit of parts comprising at least one lid as above defined in combination with an air extraction pump.
Preferably the container is a paint can.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows an exploded perspective view of one embodiment of a container in the form of a paint can and lid of the invention, and
Figures 2A and 2B show a cross section view of a second embodiment of a container in the form of a paint can and lid of the invention.
Referring to Figure 1 there is shown a paint can lid 1 to cover a paint can open face X of a paint can Y. Paint can Y is of a type well known in the art. Can Y has a rim Z around the open face X.
Lid 1 a generally circular base member 2 formed of rigid material such as plastics to cover paint can open face X. The centre of the base member 2 has a cylindrical recess 3 to accommodate a releasable air extraction valve 4.
A skirt 5 of flexible material such as a rubber or silicone extends from the periphery of the base member to seal against the periphery of the paint can wall below the rim Z adjacent the open face.
Skirt 5 includes a releasable strap 6 with an over centre latch 7 to seal the skirt against the paint can wall.
In use the lid is placeable over a paint can Y to seal the can open face X with the skirt 5 compress against the can wall by tightening strap 6 using latch 7. Air can then be extracted from the paint can using an extraction pump 8. Any paint in the can will be prevented from drying out.
Valve 4 may be a deformable one way extraction valve of a type similar to that known in the art to extract air from part full bottles on wine, and pump 8 may of the type used for the same purpose. Valve 4 is in a recess 3 so that it does not extend above the plane of the base member 2, whereby another tin can be stacked above a lid.
It is envisaged that the embodiment of Figure 1 may be sold as a kit of parts comprising at least one lid as above defined in combination with an air extraction pump.
Referring now to Figures 2A and 2B there is shown an alternative embodiment.
In Figures 2A and 2B a lid 11 is provided to cover a paint can open face X of a paint can Y. Again can Y has a rim Z around the open face X.
Lid 11 a generally circular base member 12. A radially inner part 12A of the base member formed of rigid material such as plastics and supports a releasable air extraction valve 14. A radially outer part 12B of the base member is formed of stretchable material.
A skirt 15 of flexible material such as a rubber or silicone extends from the periphery of the base member to seal against the periphery of the paint can wall below the rim Z adjacent the open face.
Skirt includes a releasable strap 16 (similar to that shown in Figure 1) with an over centre latch, and is adapted to seal the skirt against the paint can wall.
In use the lid 11 is placeable over a paint can Y to seal the can open face X with the skirt 15 compressed against the can wall by tightening strap 16 using the latch as shown in Figure 2A.
Valve 14 can then be opened and pushed into the can open face into the position shown in Figure 2B so stretching the radially outer part 12B of the base member whereby air in the can is displaced and passes through the valve 14. Valve 14 is then closed. The radially outer part 12B of base member will try to contact from its stretched state so causing a vacuum in the tin Y. Any paint W in the can will be prevented from drying out. No pump is required in the embodiment of Figures 2A and 2B.
Lids of the invention may be sold in different sizes to suit different sizes of paint can.
Features of the embodiment of Figure 1 could be incorporated into the features of Figures 2A and 2B and vice versa. For example a pump could be used in the embodiment of Figures 2A and 2B to extract air through the valve..
Whilst the lid of the invention has been specifically described for use with a container in the form of a paint can, it could be use with other containers storing material degradable by exposure to air, such as building material, e.g. adhesive or filler.
The invention may take a form different to that specifically described above.
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention.
