Abstract

Breech actions, sliding breech-block. - A gasoperated gun in which the gases move a piston to compress springs which then react to operate the breech mechanism, has a gas port of large diameter and a gas cylinder closed at the end opposite the gas port so that the piston, towards the end of its stroke, is braked by the trapped air or gas. As shown, the piston 5 is adapted to be driven forwards in the cylinder 4, the front of which is closed, by the gases entering by a port 3 of large diameter formed in a muzzle extension 2 of larger bore than the barrel. The piston is connected to a block 9 which in its forward movement compresses a spring 6, the reaction of which opens the breech and compresses the firing spring 16. The sliding breechblock 29 is locked by a vertically sliding bolt adapted to be operated by a slide 19 by means of a pin 27 and cam slot 28. The slide 19 also carries the firing hammer 21. At the end of the forward stroke of the piston, the slide 19 is engaged by a pawl 12 on a link 13 connected to the block 9, so that when the spring 6 reacts, the slide 19 is driven back to open the breech. The end of the link is guided by a cam slot 33 so that towards the end of the rear stroke, after the slide 19 is engaged by the trigger 23, the pawl 12 is disengaged from the slide.
