Abstract

A method of treating waste super absorbant polymer gels (SAP) comprises the steps of processing the waste product and introducing a salt composition to the waste which can be done in any order or simultaneously. Preferred waste processing steps include macerating or washing, and preferably the composition comprises sodium chloride. Apparatus for carrying out the above method is also disclosed as is a dispenser for dispensing salt. The apparatus may comprise a receptacle for macerating or washing the SAP, and a dispenser (possibly a pump) for introducing salt, the salt may be introduced into the receptacle, or in a different embodiment into a pipe downstream which is prone to blockage.

Description

Composition, Apparatus and Method for Treating Waste Products The present invention concerns the treatment of waste products and more particularly waste products containing super absorbent polymer gels (SAPs).
In this connection, SAPs are extensively used in urine bottles, adult nappies, children's nappies, sanitary towels and other healthcare products. They take the form of an embedded compound, pre-measured sachets or are added by hand from a tub of the compound to absorb human waste, urine, blood and other bodily fluids to prevent spills or unwanted leakage.
Products containing SAPs are often disposed of via machines such as macerators or washers where the gel can cause blockages. An object of the present invention is to alleviate the problem of such blockages.
According to the present invention there is provided apparatus for treating super absorbent polymer gels (SAPs), the apparatus comprising:-a treatment receptacle for receiving waste product; and dispensing means for introducing a salt composition to said waste product. It has been found that such a salt composition is highly effective in breaking down SAPs in the waste product.
Preferably, said dispensing means is arranged to introduce said salt composition into said treatment receptacle. In this way, the salt composition can be introduced so that is mixed into the waste product during a treatment cycle. Alternatively, the apparatus may comprise a holding receptacle, the dispensing means being arranged to introduce said salt composition into the holding receptacle for holding waste product that has undergone treatment in said treatment receptacle.
Conveniently, said dispensing means comprises a pump which can inject the salt composition to where Ut is required. Such a pump can be provided integrally within, for example, macerator apparatus or washing apparatus, In this regard, the treatment receptacle preferably comprises macerating blades for carrying out a macerating treatment. As such, the apparatus takes the form of a macerator having the additional SAPs treatment feature. Alternatively, the treatment receptacle may comprise the washing compartment of a washer, such as a bedpan washer. Such washers can be used to clean, for example, urine bottles and the like, where SAPs related blockages can present problems.
According to a further aspect of the present invention there is provided a method for treating super absorbent polymer gels (SAPs) contained in a waste product, the method comprising the steps of:-processing said waste product containing SAPs; and introducing a salt composition to said waste product.
Preferably, said processing comprises macerating said waste product. Alternatively, the processing may comprise washing said waste product.
The salt composition can be introduced before or during said processing of said waste product, or alternatively, the salt composition is introduced after said processing, when the processed waste product is held in a holding receptacle.
Preferably, said processed waste product is agitated by means of mechanical stirring. Additionally or alternatively, said processed waste product can be agitated by means of air bubbles produced from a perforated membrane connected to an air pump.
According to a further aspect of the present invention there is provided a dispensing means for introducing a salt composition to waste product containing super-absorbent polymer gels (SAPs), the dispensing means being coupled to a locality prone to SAPs blockages.
Preferably, the locality is one or more of a waste drainage system, and a domestic and/or commercial waste treatment apparatus.
According to a yet further aspect of the present invention there is provided use of a salt composition for the treatment of super absorbent polymer gels (SAPs), the composition comprising sodium chloride.
The salt composition can be provided in powder, tablet or liquid form, according to the application requirements.
Embodiments of the present invention wilt now be described by way of example and with reference to the Figure 1.
In this respect, Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a macerator 1 in accordance with the present invention. The macerator has blades (not shown) within a main processing compartment 2 for breaking up waste introduced via a lid 3.
A dispenser in the form of an pump 4 is used to inject a salt solution, into the macerator main compartment 2 in order to assist in the breaking down of any SAPs included in the waste.
In this connection following analysis and experimentation, it has been found that salt (sodium chloride) either added as a solid or solution, has proved to be effective at breaking the solidified polymer of the SAPs into a less viscous fluid.
The salt compound can be introduced directly into the macerator disposal machine before, during or after the disposal cycle, or added into the output drainage of the machine as a solid in solution, which significantly improves the flow of the effluent and prevents SAP build-up or blockage.
The principle can be extended to washers that clean urine bottles and the like, as well as standalone dispenser systems for drainage systems where blockages may occur due to other gel sources.
The apparatus can take the form of an add on' piece of equipment to neutralise the SAP compound after the gel has been processed by the existing products already in the market place or as an additional feature integrated into new machines.
Agitating the processed waste product by means of mechanical stirring or by air bubbles from a perforated membrane connected to a suitable air pump can assist the break down process.
The apparatus can take the form of a dispenser within the disposers to neutralise the gel as the disposal process takes place.
The present invention further encompasses different delivery forms of the composition, for example a tablet, a powder or liquid. Any of these can be inserted with the SAPS gel products which are put into disposal machines.
