Adding and subtracting apparatus. - An appliance for teaching arithmetic comprises a series of numeral bearing drums 3, numbered from 0 to 9 and mounted loosely on a shaft 4 carried in a box 1, the drums being visible at an opening 2 and separated by pins 5 inserted in the shaft 4. On the right-hand side of each drum is a toothed wheel 3a provided with forty teeth and on the left-hand side a toothed sector 7 having four teeth. Movement is imparted to the drums from a shaft 8 bearing a pinion 9 provided with eight teeth so that half a revolution of the crank 10 serves to move a drum forward through one unit. Lateral movement of the pinion 9 to gear with any drum of the series is permitted by an arcuate groove 14 in the shaft 8 with which the pinion engages. Transfer mechcanism.-Transfer between the drums is effected by the engagement of the toothed sectors 7 with pinions 17, having eight teeth and carried by a shaft 16. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also means for effecting a driving connection between the pinion 9 and the shaft 8 consisting of a spring-pressed ball engaging depressions in the shaft. Similar arrangements are provided between the transfer pinions 17 and the shaft 16 to allow the transfer pinions to be disengaged from the drums, rotation of the pinions being allowed by circular grooves. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
