Abstract

237,819. Clarke, Chapman, & Co., Ltd., (Soc. Anon. la Combustion Rationelle). Feb. 14, 1925. Impact pulverizers. - Relates to rotary pulverizers in which the fuel &c. under treatment is caused to travel continuously in a path of which the pulverizer and a separator form parts, the pulverizer having only one beaterwheel which also acts as a fan and the separator being mounted on the pulverizer and communicating therewith through two passages, one passage forming a conduit through which fuel &c. passes from the pulverizer to the separator and the other passage forming a conduit for the return of oversize material from the separator to the pulverizer for further treatment. According to the invention, the pulverizer casing has a smooth inner surface and the beater-wheel is mounted on the end of its driving-shaft, the casing being in direct connection with the separator through a tangentially-disposed outlet passage and through a second passage disposed so that the oversize material which passes therethrough is delivered either centrally of, or on to the periphery of, the beater-wheel. As shown, Figs. 1 and 2, the beaters 8 are attached by brackets to a steel disc or plate 7 bolted to a coupling 6 keyed on the end of a shaft 1 which is driven by a motor, either through a coupling 5 or through a belt and pulley 4. The casing 6 is circular in section with two flat ends and its inner surface is smooth. The outlet 10 is disposed tangentially and may extend vertically. Any unpulverizable material collects in a recess 11 in the bed-plate and can be removed through a removable closure 12. The casing 9 and outlet 10 are, and the recess 11 may be, lined with metal or other wear-resisting material 13. Passages 15 in the flat ends of the casing communicate with the separator 16 mounted on the pulverizer. Adjustable air-inlets 19 are provided in the ends of the casing. The fuel &c. introduced through the passage 17 is pulverized by the beaters 8 and carried with the air through the outlet 10 into the separator 16, oversize material returning through the passages 15 to the pulverizer. In Fig. 4, the return duct 15 is tangential to the casing 9 so that it discharges on to the periphery of the rotor, and the feed-shoot 17 discharges into the duct 15.
