In a safety razor in which the blade is clamped in a bent condition between a cover plate 1 and a guard plate 9 having grooves along its longitudinal edges under the blade edges, the cover plate is formed with recesses 2 at its longitudinal edges so that when the blade is tightly clamped on the guard 9 it is in contact with the inner edges of the recesses 2 but is free from the edges 3 of the cover plate and can spring upwards; when the blade is less tightly clamped, it contacts with the inner edges of the recesses and the outer edges 3 of the cover plate and is supported at its outer edges. The recesses 2 may be formed by a plate introduced beneath the cover plate. The teeth of the guard plate may be formed so as to leave a longitudinal edge to the guard for scraping. away excess lather. The cover plate and guard may also be formed with central longitudinal re-- cesses so that the guard has longitudinal projections co-operating with longitudinal surfaces or projections on the cover plate to clamp the blade.
