The roller parts are provided at their free ends with toothings, by way of which the upper and lower rollers are drivingly intercoupled for feeding a relatively wide strip F. A roller (11) is spring urged towards a roller 15 which is firmly connected with shaft (6). Description

2250A:) FEED APPARATUS FOR STRIPS OF MATERIAL The present invention
relates to feed apparatus for feeding two strips of material, for example wrapping material, with a speed differential, for example in wrapping equipment where the strips are drawn from supply spools and subsequently fed to cutting means.
Feed apparatus in which wrapping material strips are drawn from bobbins by way of transport rollers and fed to cutting equipment are known, for example from DE-OS 25 24 365 where an upper advancing roller is raised and a brake for a wrapping material strip is lowered simultaneously during each operating cycle of a wrapping machine so as to prevent running-on of the strip. During the next working cycle of the machine, the brake is again raised and the upper advancing roller is lowered at the same time and the next strip length is thereby conveyed to the blades. With this apparatus it is possible to cut only equal length strip portions even when processing wrappers with external and internal elements.
A furter apparatus of this kind is illustated in DE-AS 10 82 182, in which, after cutting-off, the two ends of strip portions initially lie directly one above lever with the roller, about which element is guided, in. that case the other at cutting blades. A the strip for a wrapper internal is situated in an upper setting. After the cut has taken place, the lever swings downwardly, while the strip of the internal element is drawn back by the roller by a certain amount relative to the strip of an external element of the wrapper. The two strip portions are now drawn together over a sweet, and into the working range of cutting equipment across the table, by tongues running to and fro and passing through the cutting equipment.
apparatus is usable only for an intermittent operating process and is therefore very limited in performance.
Finally, apparatus for conveying a stripof wrapping material and a strip from a wrapping machine is illustrated in US-PS 21 44 265, in which, however, a separate transport roller pair is required for each of the strip of wrapping material and the other strip. Such apparatus requires an appreciable amount of space and substantial constructional complication for the wrapping material feed.
There is thus a need for feed apparatus for two strips of material, the apparatus being operable so that, without additional space requirement, one strip can be longer or shorter in transport direction than the other strip.
According to the present invention there is provided feed apparatus for feeding two strips of material with a speed differential, comprising a two part first roller mounted on a first rotatable shaft to be rotatable relative thereto, a two part second roller mounted on a second rotatable shaft to be secure against rotation relative thereto and drivingly coupled to the first roller, the first and second rollers being co- operable for transport of a wider one of the strips therebetween, a third roller disposed between the parts of the first roller and mounted on the first shaft to be secure against rotation relative thereto, a fourth roller disposed between the parts of the second roller and mounted to be rotatable - 3 about an axis which is movable relative to the axis of the first shaft, the third and fourth rollers being co-operable for transport of a narrower one of the strips therebetween, and drive transmission means intercoupling the shafts for rotation thereof at respectively different speeds thereby to cause the narrower strip to be transported by the third and fourth rollers at a speed different from the speed of transport of the wider strip by the first and second rollers.
In a preferred embodiment, the parts of the first and second rollers are provided at their free ends with toothings, by way of which the roller parts, which are disposed parallel to and opposite each other, are engaged with each other. The fourth roller, which is arranged between the roller parts of the first roller, is preferably mounted to be pivotable. The drive transmission means preferably comprises a toothed wheel fastened on one shaft and disposed in operative connection with a toothed wheel on the other shaft, wherein the toothed wheel on the first shaft has a larger or smaller number of teeth than the toothed wheel on the second shaft.
In the case of a wrapping machine it is thus possible to produce a wrapping in which an inner strip projects out from an outer wrapping sleeve usable for an additonal promotion, or in which a shortened inner strip leads to an improvement in quality of the wrapping with simultaneous saving of packing material.
Embodiments of the present invention will be more particularly described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a schematic front elevation of apparatus embodying the invention and incorporated in a sweet wrappi:ig machine; Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line A-A of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a schematic view of a sweet wrapping with a shortened inner strip; and Fig. 4 is a schematic view of a sweet wrapping with an extended inner strip.
Referring now to the drawings there is shown feed apparatus comprising a divided upper transport. rol-ler with roller parts 1 and 2, which are fastened on a shaft 3. The shaft 3 is driven by way of a toothed wheel pair 4 and 5. The toothed wheel 5 is fastened on a drive shaft 6, which is driven by way of a driving toothed wheel 7. The shafts 3 and 6 are rotatably mounted in a housing 8. A divided lower transport roller with roller parts 9 and 10, is mounted to be rotatable on the drive shaft 6. Arranged between the roller parts 1 and 2 of the upper transport roller is a roller 11, which is carried by a lever 12 pivotably mounted on a bracket 13. The arm 12 is pivotable against the force of a being adjustable. The bracket Arranged between the roller parts roller is a runner 15, which is roller parts 1, 2, 9 and 10 are compression spring 14, the force 13 is fastened to a housing 8.
9 and 10 of the lower transport fastened the drive shaft 6. The provided at their free ends with toothings, wherein the roller parts 1 and 9 are intercoupled by one pair of the toothings, and the roller parts 2 and 10 are similarly intercoupled by another pair of the toothings.
Cutting equipment 16 is arranged downstream of the feed apparatus in the transport direction of the wrapping material webs P and P 1 The equipment receives its drive by way of the driving toothed wheel 7, fastened to the drive shaft 6.
1 I n use, the wrapping material webs P and P1 ' which are respectively for outer and inner elements of a wrapper and which are drawn off wrapping material bobbins (not shown), pass between the rotating roller parts 1 and 2 of the upper transport roller and the roller parts 9 and 10 of the lower transport roller. In that case, the width of the web P is such that it extends over all roller parts 1, 2, 9 and 10, inclusive of the roller 11 and the runner 15. The width of the web P,, however, is such that it occupies only the width of the roller 11 and the runner 15 and lies between the roller 11 and runner 15 and below the web P.
Due to a difference in the rotational speeds of the roller parts 1, 2, 9 and 10 of the upper and the lower transport rollers on the one hand and the runner 15 and roller 11 on the other hand, the web p 1 for the inner wrapper element is transported more rapidly than the web P for the outer wrapper element. This difference in rotational speed is achieved by the transmission ratio of the toothed wheels 5 and 4 in the drive from the drive shaft 6 to the shaft 3. This drive is further transmitted, in the ratio 1:1, from the roller parts 1 and 2 to the rollers parts 9 and 10, the roller parts being of substantially the same diameter. The runner 15, which is firmly connected with the drive shaft 6, thereagainst has the rotational speed of the drive shaft 6. Consequently, the roller parts 1, 2, 9 and 10 rotate more slowly than the runner 15 and roller 11, whereby the web P,. after cutting of both webs bu the cutting equipment 16, receives the desired advance up to the succeeding cut. The further processing in the sweet wrapping machine can take place in a known - 6 manner, wherein the projecting end of the web P, projects out of the finished wrapping.
If, however, the web P 1 in the wrapper is to be shorter than the web P, the toothed wheel 4 is constructed to have a smaller number of teeth than the toothed wheel 5, whereby the web P 1 is transported more slowly than the web P.
