Abstract

An air filter (10) comprises a transparent housing (12) within which granules of soda lime (11) incorporating a colour indicator are contained. The filter (10) further comprises an activated carbon filter (15) in two parts (16, 17). In use, fumes of hydrocarbon are removed from the air by activated carbon filter (15) and carbon dioxide is removed from the air by the soda lime granules (11). When the soda lime granules (11) have been exhausted, they change colour, and this colour change is readily seen through the transparent housing (12). <IMAGE>

Description

AIR FILTER This invention relates to an air filter for removing pollutants such as carbon dioxide and hydrocarbons from air, and particularly, but not exclusively, to an air filter for use in a car. It is desirable to use an air filter with a car, to ensure a supply of clean air to the interior of the car, despite pollution which may exist in the immediate surrounding atmosphere.
A known air filter relies upon the use of a liquid filter, to remove some of the pollutants found in the air. An air filter of this known type may be expensive to make, as well as fragile, and not easily adapted to be used in different makes of car.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an air filter which is inexpensive and robust.
According to the invention there is provided an air filter for filtering air which passes through it, comprising a first solid filter means for absorbing carbon dioxide contained in air passing through the filter, a housing enclosing the first filter means, and a second solid filter means for removing hydrocarbons from the air.
By using solid filter means, a robust- and relatively inexpensive air filter may be produced, which may be adapted for use in different cars.
The second filter means may be contained within the housing, or alternatively, it may be positioned outside of the housing.
Conveniently, the air filter further comprises air inlet means and air outlet means, the first and second filter means and the housing being positioned between the inlet means and the outlet means. Air may pass through the filter via the inlet means, and during the passage through the filter, pollutants are removed. The air then exits via the outlet means.
The inlet means and outlet means may each comprise a single duct, but preferably they each comprise a mesh comprising a matrix of holes, or a single row of holes.
Advantageously, the first filter means comprises granules of soda lime incorporating a colour indicator and at least a portion of the housing is transparent. Once the soda lime is exhausted, it changes colour and therefore, by enclosing the soda lime granules in a housing which is either partially or completely transparent, it is possible to easily ascertain when the filter requires changing.
Preferably, the second filter means comprises an active carbon filter.
Conveniently, the second solid filter means comprises a first filter part positioned between the inlet means and the housing, and a second filter part positioned between the housing and the outlet means. Thus, air entering the filter via the inlet means, first passes through the first filter means where carbon dioxide is removed from it, before passing through the second filter part of the second filter means where further hydrocarbons are removed from the air. Alternatively the filter means may be positioned such that air passes through the second filter means before passing through the first filter means.
Alternatively, the first and second filter parts may be contained within the housing.
The housing may be in the form of a hollow cuboid or a hollow cylinder, or any other convenient shape.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 is a schematic representation of an air filter according to the invention.
Referring to figure 1, an air filter suitable for use in a car is indicated generally by the reference (10). The filter (10) comprises a first filter means (11) comprising granules of soda lime incorporating a colour indicator.
Soda lime is a mixture of sodium hydroxide, and a calcium hydroxide. The soda lime granules (11) are enclosed in a transparent housing (12). The transparent housing is in the form of a hollow cuboid.
The filter further comprises second filter means (15) comprising activated carbon. In this embodiment of the invention, the second filter means is positioned outside of the housing (12), although it could also be positioned within the housing (12). The second filter means (15) is formed into two parts (16,17). An air inlet means (18) is positioned adjacent to the filter part (16) and an air outlet means (19) is positioned adjacent to the filter part (17). The inlet means (18) and outlet means (19) each comprises a mesh comprising a matrix of small holes. This allows air to flow evenly through the filter (10). In use, air from the outside of the car and for use in ventilating the interior of the car enters the filter (10) via inlet means (18) as shown by arrows (20). The air first passes through activated carbon filter (16) where hydrocarbon fumes contained in the air are removed. The air next passes through the housing (12) and into the soda lime granules (11) where carbon dioxide is removed from the air.
The air then passes through the housing (12), and into activated carbon filter (17) where further hydrocarbon fumes are removed from the air. The air then passes out of the filter (10) via outlet (19), and into the interior of the car. When the soda lime granules have been exhausted, they change colour due to the presence of the colour indicator. The colour change may be for example, from white to pink, or from green to brown, depending on the type of colour indicator used. This change of colour may be easily seen through the transparent housing (12). When this change of colour occurs, it is necessary to replace the filter with a new one.
