Abstract
A sliding wooden or wooden frame door is supported by wheels (9) which run in a respective grooved guide (12) at its lower edge and is guided at its upper edge by the provision of tabs (16) which slide in a respective groove (15) provided for the purpose, and which prevent lateral movement of the door. The guides (12) and grooves (15) are formed in a wooden frame or aperture. <IMAGE>
Description
Sliding Door system
This invention relates to a sliding door system especially but not exclusively for use with wooden or wooden framed wardrobe doors.
Conventionally sliding door systems for wardrobes utilise a metal framework together with metal runners. The wardrobe doors are generally suspended from a top runner to ensure free running with the bottom runner simply providing lateral support for the door. A modification to the system includes the provision of a wheel or wheels at the bottom of the door which engages a metal runner at the base and provides a degree of support for the door. Such systems are not however suitable for use with wooden or wooden frame doors.
According to the present invention there is provided a sliding door system comprising a wooden frame having wheel means at a lower edge and guide members at an upper edge, first and second grooved guide means being provided in a door aperture to be engageable by the wheel means and guide members respectively.
Preferably the wheel means comprise plastics material flanged rollers.
Preferably also the first grooved guide means comprises a wooden guide having a plastics material insert to provide a groove for the wheel means.
Preferably also the guide members compr#ise plastics material tabs which engage a groove in the second guide means.
The wooden frame may be a solid wooden door or a wooden frame around an alternative material panel.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. I is a front view of a corner assembly of
a first embodiment of a sliding door system in
accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the corner assembly
of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an end view of the corner assembly
of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a front view of a pair of doors
incorporating a sliding door system of the
present invention;
Fig. 5 is a view of fixing members of a sliding
door system;
Fig. 6 is a front view of a support wheel of the
sliding door system of Fig. 1;
Fig. 7 is an end view of the wheel of Fig. 6 Fig. 8 is a front view of a corner assembly of a
second embodiment of a sliding door system in
accordance with the present invention;;
Fig. 9 is a plan view of the corner assembly of
Fig 8; and
Fig. 10 is an end view of the corner assembly
of Fig. 8.
Referring to the drawings, a sliding door system 1 in accordance with the present invention is illustrated.
Referring first to Figs. 1 to 7 a system for use with wooden framed doors 2 is illustrated. Each door 2 is provided with a bottom rail 3 of 45 mm by 28 mm dimensions, a top rail 4 of the same dimensions and two side stiles 5 of 34 mm by 22 mm dimensions. The rails 3 and 4 and stiles 5 surround a safety mirror or decor panel 6 and are located together by dowels 7 and fixing members 8.
Depending on the width of each door 2, two, three or four bottom rollers 9 are fixed to the bottom rail 3 by appropriate fixing members 8. The rollers 9 are plastics material ball bearing wheels each provided with an outer flange 10.
In the door aperture a bottom guide threshold 11 is provided. This guide 11 is provided with a pair of parallel grooves 12, one for each door, each fitted with a plastics roller guide 13 in which the rollers 9 run.
A top timber plate 14 is provided in the door aperture also and is provided with two corresponding grooves 15 which are engaged by plastics material guide plates 16 mounted on the top rail 4.
In use the wooden framed wardrobe doors 2 are supported by the rollers 9 which run in the guides 13 in the grooves 12.
Additional lateral support for the doors 2 is provided by the guide plates 16 engaging the grooves 15 in the top timber plate 14.
The system can be produced in an appropriate size to fit into a prepared opening on site or the doors may be fitted into a pre formed surround frame.
Referring now to Figs. 8 to 10 a second embodiment of a sliding door system is illustrated. This system is for use with solid doors 20.
In this embodiment the rollers 9 are fixed directly through the door 20 by socket headed bolts 21. The rollers 9 run in a bottom guide threshold 11 as before and are held in position by top guide plates (not shown) as before. This system can again be fitted into a site prepared opening or be supplied with a pre formed outer frame.
Claims (8)
