Abstract

Printing apparatus comprising a printing machine (2) and a remote control desk (4) includes a densitometer arrangement in the form of a single densitometer (3) designed for static and dynamic measurement of colour density, the densitometer being suitable for use in static measurement at the control desk (4) and also for dynamic measurement at the impression cylinder (1) of the last printing unit of the printing machine (2). Thus, by using the same densitometer head at the two measurement portions, problems with calibration are avoided. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Printing apparatus The present invention relates to printing apparatus, and has particular reference to-a densitometer arrangement on a printing machine and on a remote control desk associated with the machine.
Densitometers serve for determination of colour density with the aid of measurement dashes printed along a printed sheet. The determined colour density values are utilized for initial and/or subsequent alignment of ink metering elements-of a printing machine.
It is known from DE 2 728 738 to employ a statically operating densitometer on the matching table of a remote control desk for densitometric evaluation of printed sheets. The densitometer is in the form of a freely movable hand device or as traversing device connected with the matching table of the control desk.
It is also known from US PS 3 835 771 to associated a dynamic densitometer with the impression cylinder of the last printing unit of a printing machine for dynamic densitometric scanning of printed sheets in the printing machine.
This arrangement does, however, have the disadvantage that inaccuracies in ink conduction arise through inexact calibration of the two densitometers over the entire measurement range, which leads to quality reduction, particularly in high grade printing products.
There is accordingly a need for a printing apparatus, with remote control means, in which an exact ink conduction can be achieved through densitometric evaluation of printed sheets.
According to the present invention there is provided printing apparatus comprising a printing machine with a succession of printing units each including an impression cylinderi remote control means controlling the printing machine; and a single densitometer operable to carry out both static and dynamic colour density measurement, the densitometer being selectively locatable in association with the impression cylinder of the last one of the printing units for effecting dynamic density measurement and with the remote control means for effecting static density measurement.
With printing apparatus embodying the invention there is thus used a single densitometer designed for static and dynamic measurement of colour density, the densitometer being associatable in variable location with the remote control means as well as with the impression cylinder of the last printing unit of the printing machine.
An embodiment of the present invention willnow be more particularly described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawing, which is a schematic perspective view of printing apparatus according to the said embodiment.
Referring now to the drawing, there is shown a printing machine 2 and a remote control desk 4 with a densitometer arrangement, comprising a densitometer 3.
The densitometer 3 for dynamic measurement is associated in variable location with a printing cylinder 1 of the last one of a succession of printing units of the printing machine 2. The densitometer 3 is constructed-as dynamically and statically operating measuring device and connected with the control desk. The densitometer values are displayed at the control desk and/or used for the control of the printing machine. Mounted on the control desk is a holder, on which the densitometer 3 employed in the printing machine can be arranged.
As a result, measurement problems at the printing cylinder and measurement problems at the remote control desk are solved by a single derisitometer and calibration problems do not arise.
By this relatively simple method, an exact colour density measurement is- possible at the - remote control desk (static measurement) as well as at the printing machine (dynamic measurement).
1. Printing apparatus comprising a printing machine with a succession of printing units each including an impression cylinder, remote control means controlling the printing machine, and a single densitometer operable to carry out both static and dynamic colour density measurement, the densitometer being selectively locatable in association with the impression cylinder of the last one of the printing units for effecting dynamic density measurement and with the remote control means for effecting static density measurement.
2. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, the control means comprising means adapted to provide a visual display of density values measured by the densitometer.
3. Apparatus as claimed in either claim 1 or claim 2, the control means being adapted to control the printing machine in dependence on density values measured by the densitometer.
4. Printing apparatus substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated by the accompanying drawings.
