Abstract

July 10, 1922, [Convention date] Check lift valves; valve stops; adjustable. - Means for preventing damage from backfiring and for admitting extra air to an internal-combustion engine comprise a casing 1 connected to the induction pipe by a flange 2 and to the carburettor or vaporizer by a branch tube 13, the casing being closed at the bottom by a spring-loaded relief valve 6, and the branch pipe containing one or two self-closing check valves 15. The valve 6, Figs. 2 and 4, coacts with an inverted cup-shaped seat 5 secured to the bottom of the casing 1 and provided with a port 18 to prevent the formation of a vacuum therein. The valve 6 may be opened, to admit extra air, by an arm 23 carried by a hand-operated shaft 24. An adjustable pin 17 is provided to prevent the valve 15 from opening to such an extent that it will not close by gravity.
