Abstract

4640. Dalton, T., and Smith, F. H. Feb. 24. Locking by frictional detents.- Perambulator and like brakes applied to the wheel tyres or rims, or to drums on the axles, are mounted so as to be unaffected by the oscillations of the body ; they are applied automatically when the hand is removed from the propelling-handle, and, in some cases, manually also. Fig. 1 shows one form in which the brake is pulled on by a falling lever 12 pivoted at 13 to the springs and normally held raised by a lever 19 pivoted to the side irons. The brake-operating cord 8 is wound upon a roller 18, provided with a handle and ratchet device so that the brakes may be applied manually. In place of the roller, the cord may be passed through a clip in which it is held by a cam 9, Fig. 7. The falling lever may also be held up by forming it with a handle adapted to be held with the vehicle handle. The lever 12 may be made double ended so as to slacken the cord when it falls and allow springs to apply the brakes. The cord may be led over a quadrant or roller fixed to the side irons. The brakes may be applied by a weighted lever 21, Fig. 7, normally held raised by the lever 25 pivoted to the side irons. The lever 21 is connected to the brake lever through a slotted connexion 24 so that the brakes can be applied by pulling on the cord 8. In a further form, the lever 21 in falling allows a spring to apply the brakes. The lever 21 may also push the brakes on ; or it may apply a hub brake 28, Fig. 10. The weight 27 on the lever 21 may be allowed to slide so as to increase the leverage when the lever falls. In all cases, the wheel moves away from the fulcrum of the brake lever so that the brakes cannot wedge on. According to the Provisional Specification, the cord may be connected to a revoluble handle-bar.
