Abstract
1685. Lange, O. Jan. 22. Breaking and scutching apparatus; rippling-apparatus - In a machine for picking, scutching, and swingling flax or the like, the flax is clamped in holders q mounted on arms m slidable in pivoted bearings o and drawn over teeth s by the reciprocating action of adjustable crank - disks l on the shaft k. The material is then clamped in holders l<1> and scutched between the grooved parts r<1>, r<2>. The lower part r<1> is mounted on a cross-bar p<1>, and the upper part r<2> is raised and lowered by means of teeth x, w, of different sizes, engaging a rod t', which is connected to the upper part by links s<1>. The clamp l<1> is attached to a rotary spindle k' mounted in a cross-beam c<1>, which is slidable in bearings g<1> and is forced away from the scutcher by gearing y, b<1>, the latter engaging a rack f<1>. An arm z on the shaft u, which engages a groove w<1> in the rack and moves it out of gear with the wheel b<1>, moves the clamp l<1> back towards the scutcher. When the material has been drawn through the scutcher, the belt u' becomes tightened and rotates the clamp, swinging the material against horizontal teeth v<1> and thus knocking off the wood splinters. The kinetic energy of the clamp keeps it rotating during the return stroke after the belt u<1> has slackened, and a pin x<1> on the spindle k', by engaging a groove y' in the scutcher, ensures the entrance of the material between the parts r<1>, r<2>.
