Abstract

5831. Redfern, S. March 10. Stuffing - boxes and the like.-The spindles of lift valves and sliding valves are so packed that the packing-ring is subjected to the pressure of the fluid passing through the valve, thereby packing the spindle more tightly. In the lift valve shown in Fig. 1, the conical composition packing-ring e is gripped between a bush d and a nut f. The access of fluid pressure to the space between the bush and the packing-ring tends to keep the spindle securely packed. If desired, a separate ring screwing into the bush d may be used to grip the packing-ring, or the bush may be formed integral with the casing.
