Abstract

19,139. McGuinness, D. H. K. Sept. 22, 1904, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Hand-trucks with lifting-gear.-An ordinary hand-trolly is provided with a pivoted platform which is adapted to be raised and supported in an horizontal position, thus lifting the load into a position suitable for transference to other vehicles, but which also permits of the ordinary use of the trolly. The platform is composed of wooden strips b united by crosspieces b<1> and provided with metal runners b<2>, b<3>. The runner b<2> works in grooves formed in rollers c pivoted to the trolly handles, while the runner b<3> works upon another grooved roller d mounted on one end of a pair of iron levers e, which are pivoted to the trolly at r and provided with wheels f at the opposite end. The platform is supported in various positions by the engagement of a cranked bar h, worked from a lever h<2> and rod h<3>, with a toothed quadrant h<4> fixed to the levers e, a spring h<5> being provided to secure the engagement. In operation, the truck is laid flat upon the ground in the closed position and loaded ; the operator then places his foot upon a cross-bar extending between the wheeled ends of the levers e and raises the trolly handles, whereupon the arrangement is brought into the position shown in Fig. 3.
