Abstract

19,706. Helps, G. Sept. 14. Hydraulic mains; dip-pipes.-A dip-pipe, or chamber adapted to take its place, is sealed or unsealed at will, in order to close the gas passage or to provide a clear way for the gas from the retort to the exhauster &c., by means of a displacing- chamber fixed inside, or adjacent to, the hydraulic main. The displacing-cbamber a, is connected by a pipe b and three-way cock c with a high pressure gas or air supply pipe b<1> which, if admitted to the chamber, displaces the liquid inside from a level m to a level n. This causes the liquid outside the chamber, and in the main, to rise to a level i and seal a dip-plate g and consequently a dip-chamber h. To provide a clear way between the retort k and the gas outlet o, the high pressure gas is supplied to the main at q as well as to the chamber a. An overflow pipe is fitted with a valve which may be actuated from the spindle of the three-way cock, by means of an endless chain, or by a separate chain or lever in order to obtain a varying seal. One or two displacing-chambers may be fitted inside the ordinary semi-cylindrical hydraulic main, and separate high pressure gas pipes may be fitted to the top and through the bottom of each chamber. The chamber may also be situated outside the main, a connection between the two being made by a bent pipe.
