A plastic mixture is made of 30 to 50 parts of clay, 50 to 70 parts of infusorial earth, and a solution of calcium chloride containing 10 per cent. of sulphate of magnesia. Asbestos waste may be added to the plastic material to increase cohesion, and wood wool may also be mixed . with the material to produce slabs with fine hairlike interlaced channels. Fig. 2 shows a compound tile wall for walls &c. made of burnt cellular earthenware plates A, cemented to a plate B, made from cork waste or the like. Bent metal strips C, D are embedded in the tiles, and recesses 3, 4 are made in the tiles to receive the projecting ends of the strips. In a modification shown in Fig. 3, a sheet E of wire gauze and a wire-gauze band F are used instead of the metal strips.
