The regulator is connected to the main pipe f by two bye-pass pipes d, e, the main having a stop-cock f between the points of connection of the pipes. The regulator consists of a case a, having in its lower portion three chambers b communicating with a chamber g, and the pipes d and c communicating with the space above g and the pipe e. The chamber g is also connected to the intake m of any ordinary mercury or water compressor o, and c is connected at n with the outlet from the compressor. The chamber g is closed at the top with one or two valves h, and the space above it contains a floating bell k with a mercury seal. The valve and bell are so adjusted as to act between the pressures of the gas supply before and after compression.
