Impact pulverizers.-A machine for grinding or pulverizing materials consists of a chamber divided into two or more communicating compartments fitted with beaters which preferably rotate in the same direction so that as their peripheral edges pass one another they are travelling in opposite directions. A two-compartment machine, with the lower parts 16 of the compartments 11, 12 perforated and the beaters 9 carried on horizontal shafts 6, is shown. The parallel shafts 6 may be driven by means of pulleys keyed thereon, and the beaters 9 are spaced apart on the shafts by distance-collars 10. The material is fed through a shoot 15, and is projected by the beaters in the compartment 11 through the opening 13 between the compartments into the path of the beaters in the other compartment 12. The shafts 6 are arranged so that the sets of beaters pass as close as possible to each other in their rotation without touching. Portions 14 of the inner walls of the compartments may be ribbed or fluted. The beaters may be carried upon vertical shafts.
