Description
(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO TUBE-FORMING
MACHINES
(71) We, SPIRO INVESTMENT S.A., a joint stock Company organized and existing under the laws of Switzerland, of Industriestrasse, CH-3178 Bösingen, Switzerland, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to machines for the production of metal tubing.
Lengths of so-called spiral lock-seam or helical lock-seam metal tubing, marketed for example under our Trade Marks SPIRO and
SPIROVENT, are known to be produced in machines which form the tubing from metal strip. The strip is preformed in the machine to provide shaped marginal parts which are then brought into mating engagement and clinched to form a spiral lock-seam.
As described in, for example, British Patent
No. 959,889, the marginal parts are brought into mating engagement in a forming head, and the seam is clinched on leaving the forming head. These machines have given very satisfactory results but, as with many metalworking machines, problems tend to arise on account of frictional forces created, and it is an object of the present invention to overcome or at least minimise these problems.
According to the present invention there is provided a machine for the production of metal tubing from metal strip formed with shaped marginal parts which are interengaged on being passed round a helical path, and in which inner and outer clinching rollers are provided to lock the interengaged parts into a tight seam at a nip where the faces of the rollers are parallel to one another and to the axis of the tubing being produced, characterised in that the seam-contacting clinching roller which first bends the interengaged parts has a frusto-conical face and a correspondingly angled axis of rotation so that transverse relative movement and thus friction between the face of the seam-contacting roller and the interengaged part which engages that face at said nip is reduced.
Suitably, the angle of said frusto-conical face and, thus also, the respective angle of said axis of rotation is of the order of 30.
The seam-contacting roller is the outer roller when externally seamed tubing is being produced and is the internal roller when internally seamed tubing is being produced.
The other clinching roller may be of con vendonal cylindrical form or may have a frustoconical working face.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a detail view showing the clinching rollers of a known machine for producing tubing from metal strip;
Figure 2 is a similar detail view which illustrates one form of clinching rollers according to the present invention; and,
Figure 3 is another similar view which illustrates another form of clinching rollers according to the present invention.
Referring to Figure 1 of the drawings, lengths of tubing 10 are produced in a machine such as is described in our British
Patent No. 989,889. In the machine, metal strip (11) passes through forming rollers which form shaped marginal parts that are interengaged on passing round a helical path in a forming head. As indicated in Figure 1, the shaped parts comprise a flange 12 and a channel
13 which receives the fiange 12 and is then
bent over as shown in broken lines. The parts
12 and 13, thus interengaged, then pass between an inner clinching roller 14 mounted
on a rigid arm 15 which has been pivoted to the infuse position shown in the drawing, and an outer clinching roller 16 which is mounted on a hydraulic ram 17. The rollers rotate on horizontal axes. The outer roller 16 is urged upwardly by the vertical ram 17,
and the interengaged parts 12 and 13 pass into the nip of rollers 14 and 16 to be compressed and locked together to form a helical
seam 18. It will be noted that the roller 16
is formed with side ribs 19 to prevent spread
of the seam being compressed.
As the interengaged parts enter the nip, the end of the bent-over channel 13 contacts the cylindrical working face 20 of the outer roller 16 along the line A and slides over the face of the roller to the position indicated by the line B. During this sliding movement, considerable friction is generated, even though the metal strip has retained lubricant applied prior to the formation of the marginal part and possibly also on passing through the forming head. Not only does this friction consume driving power, but the seam-contacting roller 16 must be constructed to withstand substantial transverse thrust in the direction of arrow C, and the tubing being formed must be held against the tendency to move in the opposite direction.
Referring now to Figure 2, and in accordance with the present invention, lower clinching roller 21 has a frusto-conical working face 22 and rotates on an angled axis 23. Again, the seamsontacting roller is formed with side ribs 24. The apex angle of the frusto-cone is approximately 600 and the axis 23 is angled downwardly at approximately 30 , so that the working face 22 is horizontal at its summit where it forms a nip with the inner roller 14.
In this case, the end of the bent-over channel 13 contacts the face 22 along line D which is substantially coincidental with the final position of the compressed channel end. Thus, the point of contact is maintained substantially along the line D, and a minimal amount of friction is generating in locking the seam.
The bearing for roller 21 comprises a combined thrust ball race 25 and a needle bearing 26 to take radial force. This bearing will carry a heavier load than the bearing of the prior roller 16, and the roller 21 is substantially easier to change than the roller 16.
Referring now to Figure 3, tubing 30 is internally seamed, and, in this case, inner clinching roller 31 engages seam 32. The roller 31 is similar to roller 21 (Figure 2), and is mounted on a solid bracket 33 which is held
in position in relation to upper plate 34 of the suip guide by a pivotally mounted damping arm 35. Outer clinching roller 36 which is mounted on vertical ram 17. is also of trLtSttl- conical form but with a plane working tace and rotates on an axis parallel to the axis of rotation of the inner roller 31.
The construction illustrated m Figure 3 has proved to be particularly satisfactory with suip of soft metal such as aluminium. This construction also has the attraction that the rollers 31 and 36 can be interchanged when
the machine is changed from the production
of tnternally-seamed tubing to the production
of externally-seamed tubing.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS:- 1. A machine for the production of metal tubing from metal strip formed with shaped marginal parts which are interengaged on being passed round a helical path, and in
which inner and outer clinching rollers are
provided to lock the interengaged parts into
a tight seam at a nip where the faces of the
rollers are parallel to one another and to the
axis of the tubing being produced, character
ised in that the seam-contacting clinching roller which first bends the interengaged parts has a frusto-conical face and a correspondingly angled axis of rotation so that transverse relauve movement and thus friction between the face of the seam-contacting roller and the interengaged part which engages that face at
said nip is reduced.
2. A machine as claimed in Claim 1, in which the angle of said frusto-conical face and, thus also, the respective angle of said axis of rotation is of the order of 30".
3. A machine as claimed in Claim 1 or
Claim 2, in which the other of said clinching rollers is of cylindrical form and rotates on an axis contained in a plane parallel to the plane which contains the axis of the tubing being formed.
4. A machine as claimed in Claim 1 or
Claim 2, in which the other of said clinching rollers has a frustoconical face.
5. A machine according to any preceding
Claim, in which the or each frusto-conical roller is mounted on combined thrust and roller bearings for ready replacement.
6. A machine for producing tubing from metal strip, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figure 2 or to Figure 3 of the accompanying drawings.

Claims (6)
1. A machine for the production of metal tubing from metal strip formed with shaped marginal parts which are interengaged on being passed round a helical path, and in
which inner and outer clinching rollers are
provided to lock the interengaged parts into
a tight seam at a nip where the faces of the
rollers are parallel to one another and to the
axis of the tubing being produced, character
ised in that the seam-contacting clinching roller which first bends the interengaged parts has a frusto-conical face and a correspondingly angled axis of rotation so that transverse relauve movement and thus friction between the face of the seam-contacting roller and the interengaged part which engages that face at
said nip is reduced.
2. A machine as claimed in Claim 1, in which the angle of said frusto-conical face and, thus also, the respective angle of said axis of rotation is of the order of 30".
3. A machine as claimed in Claim 1 or
Claim 2, in which the other of said clinching rollers is of cylindrical form and rotates on an axis contained in a plane parallel to the plane which contains the axis of the tubing being formed.
4. A machine as claimed in Claim 1 or
Claim 2, in which the other of said clinching rollers has a frustoconical face.
5. A machine according to any preceding
Claim, in which the or each frusto-conical roller is mounted on combined thrust and roller bearings for ready replacement.
6. A machine for producing tubing from metal strip, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figure 2 or to Figure 3 of the accompanying drawings.
