1531497 Monoazo hydrazinium dyestuffs IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 29 Sept 1976 [24 Nov 1975] 48149/75 Heading C4P Novel water-soluble dyestuffs, free of SO 3 H and CO 2 H groups, have the formula wherein D is aryl and contains at least one substituent selected from NO 2 , CN, -SO 2 NR<SP>8</SP>R<SP>9</SP> and -SO 2 R<SP>10</SP> in which R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>9</SP> are H or optionally substituted alkyl or aryl and R<SP>10</SP> is optionally substituted alkyl or aryl; D may contain other substituents; R<SP>1</SP> is H, or C 1-4 alkyl or alkoxy; R<SP>2</SP> is H, or R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> together form a fused-on ring which may contain hetero atoms; R<SP>3</SP> is halogen; Y is alkylene; X- is an anion; n is zero or 1; when n is 1, R<SP>4</SP> is optionally substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl or phenyl; R<SP>5</SP> is optionally substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl or phenyl or -NR<SP>4</SP>R<SP>5</SP> is heterocyclyl, R<SP>6</SP> is H or optionally substituted alkyl and can also be phenyl when neither R<SP>4</SP> nor R<SP>5</SP> is phenyl, and R<SP>7</SP> is H or optionally substituted alkyl, and when n is zero, -NR<SP>4</SP>R<SP>5</SP> is where Z is -(CH 2 ) 2 OH or C 1-4 alkyl. They are prepared by diazotizing DNH 2 and coupling with the appropriate hydrazinium compound, and are used to dye synthetic polymeric material such as those based on polymers and copolymers of acrylonitrile and of dicyanoethylene and on polyesters, polyamides and cellulose esters.
