Abstract

1493131 Launching slipways and cradles; fluid cushion apparatus AIR CUSHION EQUIPMENT (1976) Ltd 23 Jan 1975 [24 Jan 1974] 03363/74 Headings B7K B7L and B7S Launching apparatus comprises at least two support tracks disposed side by side, a plurality of moveable carriers for supporting a structure to be launched and superimposed on the support tracks, means for forming a load supporting cushion of pressurized liquid between each carrier and the associated track and a flexible skirt attached to each carrier for containing the associated cushion. The support tracks may be separate or part of a single base member. For each carrier and its track, the carrier may have guide elements depending from its sides into guideways so as to prevent lateral movement of for a similar purpose and as shown in Fig. 2 the track may have a constraint channel 9 which receives a similarly shaped part 10 of a carrier 35. The liquid cushion may be of sea water supplied via ducts from a pump in the track (not shown) or on the carrier 5 as shown in Fig. 2. Each carrier has a skirt 8 which may take the form disclosed in any one of Specifications 1,308,195, 1,056,267 or 1,043,351.
