Abstract

147,371. Fairfax, H. W. Gabbett-. Sept. 9, 1919. Machine guns, gas-operated. Consists in locating the gas orifice D in the cartridge chamber itself, and in providing in connexion therewith means for (1) delaying the action of the breech mechanism, and (2) preventing the fouling of the gas orifice. The gas-piston F is attached to the rod H, which carries a trip collar L, and pistons J, K. The piston K works in a cylinder M which is fixed in the framing C, and the piston J works in a cylinder O which can run on slides P, attached to the framing C, and is attached to the breech-operating mechanism by a rod R. This mechanism may be of the kind described in Specifications 128,354, 138,135, 138,136 and 139,541. On discharging the firearm, the gas pressure blows a small hole in the cartridge case, and a portion of the gas escapes through the passage D, E, and drives the piston F forwards clear of the cylinder G, compressing the air in the cylinders O, M until the rod H becomes locked to the cylinder 0 by means of the trip lever T and collar L. The expansion of the air in the cylinder M causes the rod H to move backwards, thus opening the breech. An inclined edge Z thereupon tilts the lever T and separates the rod H from the cylinder O, allowing the air in the cylinder O to expand and draw the rod R forwards to close the breech. Springs mav be used instead of air to store the energy. The location of the gas orifice D in rear of the bullet prevents fouling of the orifice by the metal of the bullet.
