Abstract

1471823 Spray carburetters controlling engines DEUTSCHE VERGASER GmbH & CO KG 11 April 1975 [31 May 1974] 15026/75 Addition to 1421821 Headings F1B and F1H The method and apparatus, for controlling the operation of an I.C. engine, as defined in any claim of Specification 1421821 is modified by the provision of a device which abruptly shuts off the supply of liquid fuel, or of air/fuel mixture to the engine and/or to the afterburner, in response to a signal which is given in conditions when there is a risk of a predetermined excessive amount of hydrocarbon fuel reaching the afterburner and causing damage to the afterburner. One or more valves, as described below, are provided, each or any of which may be actuated when the signal is received. The signal is an electrical signal and the valves are electromagnetically operated. Fig. 1 shows a valve 101 downstream of the carburetter, a valve 102 in the exhause pipe 15 leading to the afterburner 16 and a valve 103 at the outlet from the afterburner. Fig. 2 shows a valve 116 in the fuel feed line to the float chamber 105; a valve 117 between the main jet 114 and the emulsion tube 106; a valve 119 which drains the float chamber into the fuel tank 109; a valve 122 which connects a vacuum tank 121 to the air space above the fuel in the float chamber; and a valve 125 which connects a highpressure air supply 126 to a point between the emulsion tube 106 and the air/fuel emulsion outlet 107. Fig. 3 shows a twin-barrel carburetter, each barrel having its own float chamber and air/ fuel emulsion-forming devices. A high-pressure air supply 147 is connected to chamber 149 from which ducts 152, 153 and 154 lead to barrel 130 and duct 151 leads to barrel 129. In each case the ducts lead to a point between the emulsion tube and air/fuel emulsion outlet. The entrance to each duct is controlled by a pivoted flap valve and both valves are opened simultaneously by pneumatic actuator 156.
