Abstract

1441068 Lamps; systems of lighting BECKMAN INSTRUMENTS GmbH 17 April 1974 [30 May 1973] 16725/74 Heading F4R [Also in Division H1] An illumination system for an atomic absorption spectrophotometer comprises a primary radiation source 2 producing a line spectrum radiation which includes the resonance wavelength or wavelengths of the element or elements to be detected, an auxiliary radiation source 10 producing a continuum of radiation which includes the resonance wavelength or wavelengths and is broad in comparison with the width of the line spectrum radiation of the primary source, and means for energizing the two sources alternately, the sources being mounted on a common optical axis 1 so that radiation from the primary source reaches the spectrophotometer through the auxiliary source. In the preferred embodiment the source 2 is a conventional hollow cathode discharge lamp having a cathode 6 incorporating the element or elements to be detected, a hollow anode 7, a quartz window 3 and a filling of a protective gas such as helium, argon or neon. The source 10 comprises a hollow cylindrical anode 12 with its axis perpendicular to the axis 1, a U-shaped cathode 13, a screen electrode 14 which surrounds the anode and cathode and is connected electrically to the cathode, and a filling gas such as deuterium. Aligned apertures are formed in the anode 12 and screen 14 for the passage of radiation from the source 2, a lens 20 being provided to focus this radiation at the emission centre 17 of the source 10. A further lens 19 serves as the input condenser of the spectrophotometer.
