Abstract

1427705 Making steering gear BURMAN & SONS Ltd 21 Aug 1973 [9 Sept 1972] 41974/72 Heading B3A [Also in Division F2] A power-assisted steering gear of the kind with a control valve having coaxial relatively rotatable parts 12, 13 has recesses or ports 15 formed in the interior surface of the outer part 12 by electro-chemical machining or by spark erosion after the part 12 has been hardened and ground. The outer part 12 is an extension of a pinion 11 which engages the rack 10 of the steering gear. The valve controls fluid flow to a piston-cylinder device (not shown) connected to the rack. The inner part 13 is connected by a shaft 14 to the vehicle steering wheel. Relative rotation of the coaxial parts by the steering wheel causes the rack to be moved under the assistance of the piston-cylinder unit.
