Abstract

1417480 Containers for disc-packs MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 26 Sept 1973 [27 Sept 1972] 45135/73 Heading B8P [Also in Division E2] A disc-pack container comprising a bottom cover 12 has two latch members 26 for attaching the cover to a disc-pack hub 21 having an inwardly projecting annular flange 29, the two latch members being mounted on the cover for opposed reciprocal radial movement between an outer engaging position and an inner releasing position, each latch member 26 having a radially projecting lip 28 spaced from the inner surface of the cover for engagement over the flange 29, the latch member having a boss 32 projecting from the exterior surface and formed with a gripping surface for manual movement of the latch member to releasing position, a spring or springs 31 urge the latch members to their flange engaging positions, a locking mechanism comprising a blocking member 55 having a lug or lugs 54 and mounted on the cover 12 for movement between a blocking position with the lugs between the latch members to prevent movement of the latch members to their releasing positions and a non-blocking position permitting manual movement of the latch members to their releasing position and a pin tumbler lock comprising a key operated plug 52 mounted on the bottom cover for turning between a first and second position and positioned to be operable from the outer surface of the cover, the plug being in operative engagement with the blocking member 55 to move the blocking member between its blocking and non-blocking positions upon turning of the plug between its first and second positions. Each latch member has an offset portion 34 which projects through an opening 36 and the cover to overlie the cover so that the lip 28 of the portion 34 normally extends over a recess 38 in the cover, the recess accommodating the flange 29 of the hub. The blocking member 55 has an elongated opening 65 for a boss 58 of a bracket 44 screwed to the cover and an opening 81 for a pin 79 of the rotatable plug 52. Whereby rotating the plug by disengaging the sliding tumbler pins 74 from one of two grooves 73 in a sleeve 69 or the bracket causes the pin 79 to move the blocking member so that the lugs 54 disengage a portion of a flange 42 extending from each latch member to engage in elongated gaps 59 whereby the latch members move inwardly under the action of pressure on the boss 32 to disengage the hub flange 29. The latch members are locked by rotating the key in the other direction. The blocking member has an upstanding tab 61 which extends into a guiding opening 64 in the cover. The bottom cover 12 has a peripheral gasket 18 which engages with the edge of a side wall of a top cover 11. The top cover 11 has a handle 22 mounted in a depression and is formed with a socket 23 which engages over a fastening assembly 20 in the hub 21. The assembly comprises balls 24 normally projecting outwardly of orifices formed in a body 25 to engage in notches in the socket 23 by a cam axially slidable in the body. When the bottom cover is released the handle is rotated to engage a threaded end of the assembly 20 with a drive spindle of the disc-pack, a fixed pin in the spindle displaces the cam and frees the balls for inward movement to release the top cover.
