Abstract

1409264 Coal digest/PVC composition COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 1 June 1973 [29 March 1972] 14798/72 Headings C3N and C3P [Also in Division E1] A plastic composition comprises an oil or tar extended coal digest and 3-25% by weight of a vinyl chloride homopolymer or copolymer, the coal digest before extension having a needle penetration, converted to a ring and ball softening point of 85‹ C., of at least 10. Suitable comonomers that may be employed are vinylidene dichloride and vinyl acetate. Coal digest is the product formed by the treatment of coal with a pitch, tar, high-boiling oil or other solvent at an elevated temperature, e.g. 300-450‹ C. In such a coal digest the coal is present in solution either as itself or in a solvolysed form. The coal digest may be extended with an oil or tar formed in the destructive distillation of coal. Generally the oil-extended coal digest contains 0À25-1 part of oil or tar extender for each part of coal digest. The composition may also contain a finely divided particulate filler, e.g. talc, whiting, clay, slate dust and carbon black. In addition a fibrous filler may be used. The composition may also contain a tackifier, e.g. a coumarone/indene resin, suitably in an amount 2-20% by weight. The specific examples disclose compositions comprising 39-42% by weight coal digest, 15-18% by weight anthracene oil, 3À5-16% by weight polyvinyl chloride and additionally in one example 1À5% by weight of asbestos fibres.
