Abstract

1363967 Reciprocating pumps NAUCHNOISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT NEFTEKHIMICHESKIKH PROIZVODSTV USSR 3 March 1972 9958/72 Heading F1A A pump of adjustable, non-pulsating output, e.g. for delivering small quantities for laboratory use, comprises a series of pistons and cylinders, the first pumping chamber 10, Fig. 2 being connected to an outlet 4 and the second pumping chamber 11 communicating with an inlet 5 during its suction stroke and with the first pumping chamber and outlet during its discharge stroke. As shown, cylinder 6 is fixed, piston 7 and cylinder 8 are moved together by a cam 3, Fig.1, acting through a rocker 17 and rod 21, and piston 9 is moved 180 degrees out of phase with piston 7 and cylinder 8 by cam 3 acting through rocker 18 and rod 22, a pivot 25 being movable to adjust the pump output. Springs 23, 24 bias cam follower rollers 19, 20 onto cam 3. The cam is shaped to produce a discharge stroke slower than the suction stroke. In operation, with piston-cylinder 7, 8 and piston 9 moving upwardly, liquid is discharged from chamber 10 through outlet 4, valves 13 and 15 being closed. When piston 9 starts to move downwardly, with piston-cylinder 7, 8 still moving upwardly, valve 13 remains closed and valve 15 opens to admit liquid into chamber 11 from inlet 5. Finally, piston-cylinder 7, 8 starts to move downwardly and piston 9 moves upwardly, valve 15 closing and valve 13 opening so that liquid continues to be discharged through outlet 4. In Fig.3 (not shown) valves 13, 15 are replaced by a slide valve controlling parts in a housing on cylinder 6, one part communicating with pumping chamber 11 via a flexible pipe. In Fig.4 (not shown) the valves are ball, non-return valves in a housing on cylinder 6. In Fig. 5 (not shown) a change-over valve (31) operated by the piston movement is incorporated in the piston-cylinder 7, 8. In Fig. 6 (not shown) piston-cylinder 7, 8 is replaced by a doublecylinder and cylinder 6 by a fixed piston, piston 9 being formed with a flat on its side wall and being rotatable to function as a valve controlling an inlet port and a passage between the cylinders.
