Abstract

1354884 Alumina fibres IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 April 1971 [23 April 1970] 19558/70 Addition to 1314167 Heading C1A [Also in Division B1] In order to prevent spontaneous crystallization, in the presence of anisometric particles, and to delay the inception of the epitaxial growth of crystallites, on the anisometric particles of the parent Specification, until the particles have been oriented, a protective colloid is added to the growth solution. The particles are thereafter oriented by extrusion of the solution and the crystallites grown. Besides the anisometric particles of the parent Specification 1,314,167, aluminium silicate fibrils may be used. The following are disclosed as protective colloids which did not tend to flocculate the particles, polyethylene glycol or esters thereof, alkyl aryl sulphates, cellulose derivatives, polyethylene oxide or its condensates, naphthalene sulphonic acid formaldehyde condensation products, soluble proteins, polyvinyl pyrollidone, and hydroxylated polymers. In an example, Al powder is dissolved in a solution of AlCl 3 to give a solution of aluminium oxychloride. A colloidal gas of anisometric particles of aluminium monohydrate is formed from a portion of this solution by diluting and heating under pressure and is added to a solution of high molecular weight p.v.a. in water. The original aluminium oxychloride solution is seeded with the inhibited colloidal gel and evaporated under reduced pressure, until it has been reduced to a thick syrup. Magnesium chloride may be added before evaporation to limit the growth of the crystals. The syrup is extruded under N 2 pressure through a spinneret. The filament is drawn down to a diameter of 5-10 microns and placed in a furnace heated to 750‹ C. The alumina particles are all found to be aligned, since the aluminium oxychloride decomposed to alumina crystallites, which are oriented in the same direction as the alumina particles formed from the anisometric particles. The fibres may be soaked in an ethanol solution of ethyl silicate and re-fired at 1500‹ C., to give a fibre containing silica. The fibres are used in fireproof textiles and for thermal insulation.
