1352996 Grouting compositions BORDEN CHEMICAL CO (UK) Ltd 12 May 1971 [19 May 1970] 24269/70 Heading C3R [Also in Division E1] A grouting composition comprises an aqueous alkaline solution or dispersion of a polyphenolic material, formaldehyde, paraformaldehyde or a water-soluble phenolformaldehyde resole, and a gelling agent derived from one of the complexing agents Si, V, Mo, Mn, Ti, Cu, Zn or Zr. Suitable gelling agents include the K, Na, Li or NH 4 salt of silicate, cuprate, zincate, zirconate, manganate, titanate, permanganate, vanadate or molybdate; the chloride, sulphate, nitrate, hydroxide or oxide of any of the stated elements. Suitable polyphenolic materials are vegetable tannin extracts such as those extracted from mimosa, quebracho, mangrove and wattle; catechin and catechu extracts such as those extracted from acacia catechu, acacia suma or mahogany wood; and the alkaline extracts of the barks of western hemlock, Douglas fir, white fir, Sitka spruce or Southern Yellow Pine. The concentration of the polyphenolic material in the composition is suitably 2-45% by weight, and the gelling agent is suitably used in an amount of 0À1-6À5% by weight based on the polyphenolic solids. Optional ingredients include fillers such as sodium chloride; preservatives; anti-dusting and anti-foam agents. In the examples aqueous alkaline grouting compositions are prepared from mimosa extract and (1) HCHO, sodium silicate and dibutyl phthalate; or (2) paraformaldehyde, NaCl filler, dibutyl phthalate, carnea oil and one of the following gelling agents: V 2 O 5 , sodium metasilicate, KM n O 4 , sodium molybdate, manganous sulphate, ZrCl 4 and TiCl 4 .
