Abstract
1349285 Fluid operated actuators HANS HOLLAND GmbH 4 Aug 1971 [7 Aug 1970] 36579/71 Heading F1D A fluid operated piston 9 and cylinder 6 in which a spindle 1 is rotatably mounted in an end 3 of the cylinder 6 and threadingly engages an internal bore 10 in the piston 9, includes a support base 2 rigidly attached to the spindle 1 such that it can engage the end 3 to prevent rotation of spindle 1 due to friction between the surfaces of base 2 and end 3, such constraint of the spindle serving to lock the piston 9 in any required position. During operation fluid, preferably oil, is fed to an annular recess 4 in an end part 3a to force base 2 and end 3 apart and create a "hydrostatic bearing" effect. This permits the spindle 1 to rotate whilst the piston moves back and forth. To lock the piston 9 in any position, fluid is exhausted from the annular recess 4 to allow the base 2 and end 3 to engage and thus prevent spindle rotation. When piston 9 moves leftwards, it pulls base 2 away from end 3 thus obviating the need to feed oil to recess 4.
