Abstract
1343664 Cooling towers PARKER ENGINEERED CHEMICALS Inc 8 Dec 1971 56924/71 Heading F4K A cooling system, of the kind incorporating a cooling tower 10, a sump 15 provided with a float valve 14 controlling the supply of fresh water, and a recirculation pump 16 functioning to pass water from the sump 15 through the heat exchanger of a refrigeration unit 18 forming part of an air conditioning system and back to a spray conduit 19 adjacent the top of the tower, includes water treatment apparatus which is rendered operative only when fresh water is supplied via valve 14 to the sump. The apparatus comprises a bleed valve 20 for removing stale water from the system and injection pumps P 1 , P 2 , P 3 arranged to inject chemicals, such as corrosion inhibitors and algaecides, from sources 22, 23 24 into the recirculation conduit 25 downstream of the refrigeration unit 18. Electric circuitry (see Fig. 2, not shown) energized by means of a flow switch 12 and comprising an arrangement of stepping switches (39, 49), selector switches (SW1, SW2, SW3), solenoids (21, 36, 48) and relays (R 1 , R 2 ) is provided to selectively control the frequency of operation of the pumps P 1 , P 2 , and P 3 and of the bleed valve 20. The pump P 1 may inject sulphuric acid to control the pH of the system, pump P 2 a corrosion inhibitor, e.g. a chromate base liquid, and pump P 3 an algaecide, e.g. an ammonium based liquid. Generally pump P 3 will be set for less frequent operation than pumps P 1 and P 2 .
