Abstract

1331057 Distillation apparatus, control; desalination of water WEIR PUMPS Ltd 29 Dec 1970 [4 Dec 1969] 59184/69 Heading B1B A liquid is purified by distillation in an apparatus comprising feed conduit 5, evaporator 1, condenser chamber 2, distillate conduit 13, and distillate discharge pump 15 and pipe 17, the apparatus being automatically controlled by feed flowmeter 38 and off-on controller 22 which switches off the motor 18 of pump 15 when the feed flow rate falls below a predetermined value, thereby feeding distillate back to the evaporator through conduit 6. Non-distilled liquid is withdrawn from the evaporator through jet pump 10 which maintains a vacuum in the apparatus. In the production of fresh water from sea water, the ratio of the flow rate of the sea water feed to the flow rate of the fresh water distillate is preferably maintained at 2:1 whereby the salt concentration of the excess brine does not rise above a predetermined value, and the likelihood of scale formation on the heat transfer surfaces of the evaporator is diminished. The heating medium for the evaporator may be the jacket cooling water of a diesel engine.
