In a gas burner having main flame ports 10, a lip 2 is provided over a retention flame port 6 to prevent blockage thereof. As shown, the lip 2 is formed on a ring 1 sandwiched between a burner base 5 and a cap 9 to define the flame ports 6, 10. At starting some of the gas passes via a bore 8 and a flash tube (not shown) to a standing pilot (also not shown), the resulting ignition flame traversing a slot 8a in the base 5 to the flame ports 6, 10.
