Abstract

1,242,621. Detecting dirt or condensation on windows. ELTRO G.m.b.H. & CO. GES. FUR STRAHLUNGSTECHNIK. March 27, 1969 [March 27, 1968], No.16049/69. Heading G1A. The presence of dirt or condensation on a window 1 is detected by the use of two triangular prisms 2, 3 which are cemented on the inside window surface, a light source 4 and a photo-cell 5. With a clean outer surface light entering the glass of the window is totally internally reflected back and forth along the pane until it can emerge only via prism 3 on the inner surface, and is detected by photo-cell 5. The presence of a drop 7 condensed water on the outer surface allows some light to escape and the photo-cell output is therefore slightly diminished. A decreased output caused by condensation or dirt can be detected and used after amplification, to initiate operation of an alarm lamp or other signalling device or control the starting of, for example, a windscreen wiper or washer.
