A mill system comprises a disc mill having a pair of discs (of carborundum or other abrasive material) and a preliminary grinding mill comprising two fluted surface-hardened steel rollers which contra-rotate and have a gap between them. Material, e.g. fragmented, cocoabean kernals still contaminated by e.g. small stones, is supplied via a hopper to the roller gap, the fluting accepting the fragmented kernels and pre-crushing them and the stones to a size which prevents any appreciable damage to the discs. The roller mill is pivotably mounted on a journal on the side of the disc mill.
