Abstract
1,231,174. Shaft couplings; bearings. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. 5 July, 1968 [3 May, 1967], No. 20550/67. Headings F2A and F2U. In order to reduce fretting corrosion in a coupling of the kind having ball bearing assemblies 15 carried by one shaft and slidably engaged in longitudinal grooves defined by ribs 14a formed in a sleeve, the balls 15c of each bearing are formed of, or covered by, a resilient material, and the outer race 15b of each bearing has a covering 15d of a resilient material. The coefficient of friction of the covering 15d and of the balls 15c ensures that the outer race is rotated as the sleeve moves axially and causes the balls to rotate. The coupling may be employed in a fuel control and metering system for a gas turbine in which the fuel enters the sleeve through adjustable apertures and escapes through further openings in the sleeve.
