Abstract
1,228,876. Refining metals; making alloys; nodularizing cast iron. INTERNATIONAL MEEHANITE METAL CO. Ltd. April 18, 1968 [Nov.27, 1967], No.53777/67. Heading C7D. Additions are incorporated in molten metals, particularly alkali, alkaline or rare earth metals e.g. Mg, Ba, Sr, Li, Ce, Na, K or alloys thereof in molten iron or steel, by introducing a stream of the molten metal into one compartment defined by at least one partition of refractory material e.g. a raised slab or bars, across the floor of a ladle or other container, wherein at least one other compartment so defined initially contains an additive covered with a layer of granular or powdered calcium carbide, graphite, carbonaceous material, flux or slag forming material, e.g. limestone or fluorides. Where the container is partitioned to form three or more compartments on its floor and two or more additives are used, the heights of the partitions may differ so that molten metal enters the compartments in a predetermined order. For example, 151bs of granular 14% Mg. FeSi alloy were placed in the additive compartment and covered with 51bs of granular graphite, prior to tapping one ton of molten cast iron into the metal-receiving compartment of the ladle and modularizing.
