Abstract

122,034. Kayser, C. W., and Robinson, J. E. Jan. 12, 1918. Couplings.-A holder for a furnace electrode comprises a frame a and extension a<1>, both made with passages for water circulation, the extension serving to protect a device for adjusting a bearing plate c, which co-operates with other plates c<1> either backed by replaceable pack ings or mounted so as to rock. The adjusting device for the plate c may comprise screws, cams, eccentrics, levers, wedges, or springs. In one construction, the frame is supported by arms b from a carriage on a post. Water enters preferably by openings i near the post and escapes by an opening j at the opposite side of the frame. Within the frame is a ledge supporting the bearing-plates. The plate c is adjusted by two screws d working in fixed nuts, and is guided and retracted by a spring-urged rod between the screws. The other plates c<1>, c<2>, are guided by pins i, and are backed at each end by one or more removable packing-pieces h inserted in grooves in the frame. Terminal brackets may be integrally attached to the bearing-plates above the frame. In another construction, one bearing-plate is adjusted by a screw, rotatably connected to a backing secured to the plate. The other plates are provided with machined bosses fitting curved recesses in the frame so that they can rock slightly to allow for irregularities in electrodes; these plates are held by bolts, the heads of which are situated in slots.
