Abstract

1,220,327. Triac switching circuits. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 26 March, 1969 [29 March, 1968], No. 15710/69. Heading H3T. [Also in Divisions H1K and H1N] A vane operated magnetic switch has a non-magnetic housing 12 with a slot 18 which can receive the magnetic vane 20 to divert the magnetic flux from a permanent magnet 38 and effect operation of a reed contact unit 48 connected to apply a control signal, when its contacts are closed, to the gate terminal 64 of a Triac or semi-conductive bidirectional device 60 which has two main current terminals 62, 64 connected to control the energization of a load from an A.C. supply. The reed contacts may be normally open and be closed when the flux from the U-shaped permanent magnet 38 is diverted from a biasing U-shaped permanent magnet 39 arranged with its poles such that its flux passes along the reeds when the flux of the permanent magnet 38 is diverted. The sealed contact unit 48 is held by a spring clip 58 and the housing may be filled with plastics material. The semi-conductive device 60 may have its casing terminals 62 serrated and press-fitted in an aperture in a heat sink block 72 which is mounted on the metal end plate 24 of the housing 12 so as to be separated therefrom by a thin sheet 74 of electrically insulating material which allows heat transfer to the plate 24.
