Abstract

1,161,793. Expanding-wheel gear. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 31 Aug., 1966, No. 38894/66. Heading F2D. In a centrifugal ball-operated expanding V-belt pulley 15 of a two-speed drive for a washing machine, the ball-operated axially movable pulley flange 19 and fixed ball abutment member 16 are moulded from phenol formaldehyde. The fixed pulley flange 18 may additionally also be of this material. The flange 19 is formed with radial ball pockets 26 and intermediate axially-slotted extensions 28 in which engage driving dogs 33 of the abutment member 16 keyed to the driving spindle of a twospeed motor 10, balls 20 being housed in the pockets 26 and centrifugally moved outwards, at the higher motor speed, along ramps 32 on the member 16 to axially thrust the flange 19 towards the fixed flange 18 for the higher ratio drive to a spring-loaded pulley 12 formed with a further pulley 25 driving the washing machine drum (Figs. 1 and 2, not shown).
