Apparatus for incorporating a bead ring in a cylindrical tyre carcass of cord plies wound on a rigid, non-expansible drum (see Fig. 24, not shown) comprises external fingers 1400 radially and axially movable to position and hold a bead ring radially spaced from and encircling the carcass plies, radially-movable internal beadgripping fingers 1337 carried by a cylindrical support 1302 axially movable relative to the drum and to fingers 1400 whereby the support may enter one end of the carcass and the fingers 1337, 1400 may be radially aligned, and an inflatable bag 1330 co-operable with a perforated cylinder 1305 for effecting ply turnover. After ply turnover the internal diameter of the body of the carcass is nowhere greater than that of the bead region and the angle α is between 0 and 70 degrees where α is measured radially outwardly of an axial line through the centre of gravity of bead ring cross-section between (a) that axial line, and (b) a line from the said centre of gravity to the point of first contact between the carcass body and the folded-over end. Sensing means including a head 1354 responsive to contact with the drum operates a brake to stop the support 1302 a predetermined distance from the drum so that the apparatus needs no adaptation for different drum sizes. Bead rings are supplied to the fingers 1400 by a transfer arm (1575) (Figs. 47, 50, not shown) from a magazine (1516). Two magazines (1516) are provided on a rotatable frame so that one may be renewed while bead rings are being supplied from the other.
