Abstract

1,136,699. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 9 Aug., 1967, No. 36513/67. Heading C5E. [Also in Divison C7] Polymeric aromatic compounds are prepared by electrolysing a solution comprising a C 6 - C 20 aromatic compound and a ternary complex having the formula R : HX : 2AlX 3 wherein R is a C 6 -C 20 aromatic compound at least as basic as the aromatic compound to be polymerized and X is Cl or Br. The aromatic compound to be polymerized may be benzene, biphenyl, naphthalene, an alkyl, e.g. methyl substituted benzene, a naphthalene, or a biphenyl; thus R may be the same or more basic, e.g. benzene, biphenyl, toluene, xylene, pseudocumene, hemimellitene, (iso)durene, mesitylene, prehnitene, pentamethylbenzene, hexamethylbenzene, isopropyl benzene, (1,3,5-dimethyl)- ethylbenzene, ethyl toluene or (di)methylnaphthalene. Many polymeric products are specified including p-poly- or sexi-phenyl (C 36 H 26 ). The electrolysis cell may be divided by a diffusion hindering membrane, e.g. of fritted or sintered glass, asbestos, porous ceramics or plastics, paper or perforated metal, wherein the ternary complex is preferably employed only in the anode compartment. A Ptgroup metal or Ta anode, and a Pt-group metal, Al, Cu, Hg, W, Ti, Zr, Hf, Ta, ferrous metal or C cathode may be used.
